"The History of Vitagraph Studios"
Friday, February 17 at 5 PM
on Zoom*
Thanks to Curt Martin, a member of Wellesley Neighbors, we will learn the history of one of the first silent film companies in the United States. Curt's great-grandfather was an integral part of this story. The Vitagraph motion picture company was founded in 1897 by two young, English immigrants: Albert E. Smith and J. Stuart Blackton. Over their first decade, they moved from producing newsreels and novelty shorts of moving trains and trolley cars to feature-length dramas and comedies, including the first film portrayals of Shakespeare's plays. At its height, Vitagraph was the leader among U.S. film companies and had studios in Brooklyn and Hollywood as well as offices in Paris and London. Smith sold the company to Warner Brothers in 1925.
