"How Working in the Archives
Made Me A Movie Star"
Jean Berry
Thursday, March 30, 2023
7:30pm Zoom Talk
According to our speaker, Jean Berry, who was an archivist for many years, although there are many types of archives, an academic setting offers more variety and exposure to many people and questions. At Wellesley College, she responded to individuals writing books or dissertations, or to academic departments working on department re-accreditation. Occasionally requests came from television or movie people. One such request, in 2001, came for a new film, Mona Lisa Smile, starring Julia Roberts, which was to be filmed on campus. The Wellesley archives were flooded with requests for information about the college in the 1950s. Jean will describe the research involved – and her involvement in the filming as an extra!
Jean has lived in Wellesley for 50 years. During that time she has served on Wellesley’s Historical Commission and on the Historic District Commission, where she chaired for many years. Both of these reflected her interest in history and architectural history/preservation. For seventeen years she was an archivist at Wellesley College. While there she earned a M.A. in History, with a concentration in Archives, at UMass Boston. Since she retired from Wellesley, she has been archivist for The New England Unit of The Herb Society of America and TBB Scholarships, Inc.
