Presented by our Health and Wellness Committee, Margie E. Lachman, Ph.D, teaches and does research at Brandeis University. Her focus is lifespan development, particularly in midlife and later life. With funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), she seeks to identify factors that mitigate declines in cognition and health. Also, she is conducting longitudinal studies to examine long-term predictors of mental and physical health, as well as intervention studies to improve performance and adaptation to problems of aging. Her program designed to increase control over falls has already been widely adopted.
A graduate of Boston University, Margie earned her advanced degrees at Pennsylvania State University. She is he Minnie and Harold Fierman Professor of Psychology at Brandeis and also
Director of the Lifespan Developmental Psychology Lab and the Boston Roybal Center for Active Lifestyle Interventions. She was editor of the Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences and has edited two volumes on midlife development. A member of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur
Foundation Research Network on Successful Midlife Development, Margie is co-investigator on the third longitudinal follow-up of the original MacArthur midlife sample (MIDUS). Her work has been recognized by many awards.
