Already a successful business woman, in 1950 Iris Apfel and her husband, Carl, cofounded Old World Weavers, a textile firm that replicated the rare and luxurious fabrics they found during their world-wide travels. A high-profile interior designer, she carried out projects in the White House for nine presidents, the State Department, the Metropolitan Museum, and the rich and famous like Estée Lauder, Greta Garbo, and Faye Dunaway. And in her 90s, she unexpectedly became a model, the subject of a documentary, and a style icon, a trendsetter who shaped and still shapes the $2.4 trillion fashion industry. In fact, just this March the international clothier H&M launched an entire line of women’s clothes and accessories in collaboration with Iris Apfel to celebrate her 100th year! She’s a centenarian with both attitude and flair, someone worth getting to know.
