          Cocktails and Conservation

     Our guest speaker, Andrea Donlon, the river steward for the Connecticut River Conservancy, has many responsibilities including participating in an annual river cleanup, monitoring bacteria at boat launches and swimming holes as well as advocating for new policies and regulation.
      At our cocktail hour, Andrea will introduce us to the river, which runs through four states and then will tell us about hydropower from the Turners Falls dam, located on the Connecticut River in Montague, MA.  Wellesley's municipal light plant is one of many communities that recently contracted to purchase electricity from this source.  Finally, Andrea will explain how power is generated there, and we can explore what we think of hydropower as "green" energy.
