Although previously not well known in the United States, Wifredo Lam's works are now widely acclaimed (one of his paintings sold for $9 million last July) for uniting surrealism with aspects of the cultures of Africa and the Caribbean.  Judy Frommer and Polly Conlon will begin the session by talking about Lam's fascinating life in Cuba, Spain, France and Italy and then presenting some of his most significant paintings. To prepare for the discussion, we suggest that you visit the virtual exhibit "Wifredo Lam in Marseille:  Art in Exile" on the website of Wellesley College's Davis Museum.  Click on the painting on the left to access the exhibit directly.
