This production of "Hindle Wakes," the first in the United States in 95 years, was nominated for the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Play. It was staged many times in England during that same period.
HINDLE WAKES, written by Stanley Houghton in 1912, was made into a movie four times between 1927 and 1952. Set in a fictional English mill town in Lancashire, it concerns two young people, Fanny Hawthorn and Alan Jeffcote. Into the mix come the inter-workings of class, consensual sex between unmarrieds, AND a lot more of interest. Controversial in its time, it’s guaranteed to generate a lively discussion in our own.
