Marcel Marceau : the Golden Silence on Thursday at 3:00 PM
About this event
THE GOLDEN SILENCE OF
MARCEL MANGEL aka MARCEL MARCEAU
1923-2007
April 8 at 3:00 PM
Marcel Marceau, born March 22, 1923 in Strasbourg, France, became one of the most famous mimes in the world. He created his own school, Compagnie de Mime Marcel Marceau, in 1948, for the development of the mime arts. Bip, was the white-faced character, based on the French Pierrot, he played on stage and screen.
Most of the accomplishments of the world's best known mime have depended on his ability to move rather than to talk. And many of his admirers don’t know half of it. For instance, did you know that, as an adolescent, he and his Jewish family were ordered to leave their home in Strasbourg on two hours notice and to emigrate to Southern France? Were you aware that even before he studied to become a mime, he joined the French Resistance in Limoge during the Vichy regime? Have you heard the story of how he wordlessly saved the lives of both Jewish and Christian youth by forging their date of birth on their identification documents? Can you believe that disguised as a Boy Scout he was able to deceive Nazis enough to get French children to Switzerland, out of harm’s way? And although he did not talk about these experiences for half a century, we now know that the “The Master of Silence” was also a hero of World War II.
The following videos show several iconic sketches Marcel Marceau created. We will talk about our memories of him at the Zoom meeting.
