Along with Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró completes the triumvirate of famous Spanish surrealists, all born in Catalonia.  Especially in his last 20 years, in his 70s and 80s, Miró combines the conscious and the subconscious into a super reality that often transports us to a playful, childlike, whimsical, pleasing, and thoroughly eccentric private world.

His sometimes minimal, sometimes simple, and always attractive objects and creatures spread out on paper or on canvas with bright colors befriend us. His sculptures, usually composed of natural things he had picked up or man-made castoffs, intrigue and astound. He can captivate us even with just a dot or two or a line or two or a dot and a line.

In advance of the meeting, please take a guided virtual tour of this exhibition of works from Miró’s final period. Then watch a brief slide show of some of his major pieces as you listen to music for the piano by the Catalan composer Federico Mompou played by the acclaimed pianist Artur Rubinstein.
