Volunteering
with Wellesley Neighbors

Dear potential volunteer,

Thanks for your interest! Wellesley Neighbors is part of a growing “Village Movement” across the country, with more than 200 Villages now thriving nationwide. The goal is simple yet powerful: to help older adults remain safely, comfortably, and actively engaged in their communities for as long as possible.

At Wellesley Neighbors, we do this through the support of neighbors helping neighbors. As a volunteer, whether you are a member or not, we will work with you to match your interests, skills, and availability with the needs of our members. Your efforts create meaningful connections, reduce isolation, and make it possible for members to navigate the challenges of aging with confidence and dignity.

We are deeply grateful for the commitment, time, and care of all of our volunteers. Together, we make Wellesley Neighbors stronger.

With appreciation,
Joan Minklei, Executive Director

The Value of Your Time

Did you know?  In Massachusetts the value of volunteer time is estimated at $42 per hour. Nationally, the 2024 average was $34.79, reflecting the incredible impact volunteers make across the country. While no dollar amount can truly capture the generosity and care of our volunteers, these numbers highlight just how valuable your contributions are, not just to Wellesley Neighbors but to the community and society as a while.

When you volunteer with us, you're not only helping neighbors, you are investing in the well being and resilience of our entire community.

Wellesley Neighbors thrives thanks to our dedicated volunteers.

They are the heart of our community, sharing time and talents to help older adults live vibrant, connected lives. Volunteers help by:

•  Driving members to appointments (our most in-demand service!)
•  Running errands and delivering groceries
•  Providing tech support and companionship
•  Helping with light household tasks
•  Supporting events and office coordination

Whether you can give a few hours a month or a week, your help makes a real difference.

Transportation

Across the country, seniors identify transportation as one of their greatest needs and Wellesley Neighbors is no exception. Rides are our most frequently requested service. Our volunteer drivers provide safe and friendly transportation to a variety of destinations, including medical and dental appointments; grocery stores, pharmacies, and post offices; Wellesley Neighbors events and activities; and social, cultural, or educational outings.

To help us schedule effectively, we ask members to submit requests 3–5 business days in advance. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate same-day requests. Because our service depends on the availability of volunteer drivers, submitting a request does not guarantee a ride. We encourage all members to have a backup plan in place.

Do you drive? We would love to have you join our team of volunteer drivers. More drivers mean more rides—and more opportunities for our members to stay engaged and independent.

Technology Support

In today’s world, technology is often essential for staying connected—but it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Wellesley Neighbors offers support to help members feel more comfortable and confident using simple, safe, and easy-to-use tools.

Whether it’s learning how to use Zoom to join an event, setting up a smartphone, or figuring out email and text messaging, our volunteers can provide step-by-step help. We also share written instructions and practical tips to make technology easier to use.

For members who need more personalized guidance, one-on-one assistance can be scheduled by contacting the Wellesley Neighbors office. Our goal is to help every member stay connected—to family, friends, and our WN community.

Home Support Visits

Sometimes it’s the little things around the house that can make life easier. Some Wellesley Neighbors volunteers offer home support for members who need an extra hand. These visits can make a big difference by allowing members to remain comfortable and independent in their own homes.

Examples of typical requests include:

  • Changing a light bulb or smoke-detector battery

  • Bringing light items up from the basement or down from storage

  • Watering plants or helping with small organizing tasks

  • Writing labels, sorting papers, or similar light assistance

Important: This service does not include heavy cleaning, ongoing housekeeping, or physically demanding chores such as moving furniture. By offering your time and skills, you provide not just practical assistance, but also reassurance and companionship to our members.

Medical Companion & Scribe

Attending a medical appointment can sometimes feel overwhelming. Wellesley Neighbors volunteers can serve as a medical companion, providing transportation to and from an appointment and waiting with you if desired. In addition, a volunteer can act as a scribe, helping to take notes during the visit so that you can focus on the conversation with your provider.

This service is designed to support, not replace, the role of a family member or caregiver. Volunteers do not make medical decisions, but they can be a valuable second set of ears and help ensure you have a clear record of what was discussed.

Requests for this service should be made through the Wellesley Neighbors office, with as much advance notice as possible so we can arrange a volunteer. This opportunity is only available for current Wellesley Neighbors members.
