In the Fall 2008, inspired by a talk from the founders of Beacon Hill Village, a group of Wellesley friends began to imagine a new kind of community -- one where older adults could stay in their own homes, stay engaged with the world around them, and support one another along the way.
The vision centered on three simple but powerful goals:
- Connection and friendship through a wide range of social, cultural, educational, and wellness activities,
- Neighborly support with everyday needs like with rides, a companion for medical visits, grocery shopping; and
- Trusted resources by gathering and sharing member recommendations for reliable service providers from painters and plumbers to healthcare agencies and attorneys.
Wellesley Neighbors began in 2011 as Wellesley at Home with 113 members. Just two years later we became Wellesley Neighbors to reflect the growth of our community beyond Wellesley, welcoming members from Dover, Natick, Needham, and Weston among other towns.
Today, we are a vibrant network of up to 150 older adults who come together to share meals, explore new interests, enjoy cultural outings, and, most importantly, support one another. Along the way, friendships are formed, laughter is shared, and life is richer.
Since our founding, volunteers have fulfilled over 2,000 requests, whether it's a ride to an appointment, a warm meal, a prescription pickup, or a bit of computer coaching. And with a trusted list of more than 300 local service providers, we're always ready to connect members with reliable help when they need it.
Our staff and member volunteers work hand in hand to create a rich variety of activities, programs, and events, along with countless ways to stay engaged in the community. We provide practical support that make it easier for members to stay active, independent, and healthy while navigating the many transitions that come with aging.
