Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a Village?

Villages are grassroots, community-based organizations built on the idea of neighbors helping neighbors. The very first Village—Beacon Hill Village—was founded in Boston in 2001. Since then, the Village Movement has grown to more than 350 Villages nationwide, all dedicated to helping older adults remain active, engaged, and independent in their own homes and communities.

In 2010, the Village to Village Network was created to connect Villages across the country, offering shared resources, best practices, and collaboration. Each Village is unique, shaped by the needs and character of its own members, but all share the same mission: to make aging in place easier, safer, and more joyful.

What sets Villages apart is their flexibility and community spirit. They blend practical support with opportunities for friendship, learning, and connection. By combining social activities, volunteer services, and trusted referrals, Villages create a sustainable model of aging in community that is both empowering and cost-effective.

How Did Wellesley Neighbors Begin?

The story of Wellesley Neighbors began in 2008, when a group of local friends, inspired by Beacon Hill Village, began to envision a supportive community for older adults in Wellesley and surrounding towns. By 2011, the organization formally launched—originally under the name Wellesley at Home—with more than 100 members. Soon after, we became Wellesley Neighbors, reflecting our broader community reach.

Do I have to live in Wellesley?

Definitely not!  Today, Wellesley Neighbors serves members in Wellesley, Natick, Needham, Dover, Sherborn, Weston, Sudbury, Holliston and other towns providing both social connection and practical support so members can thrive at home as they age.

Why Join Wellesley Neighbors?
Everyone knows the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The same is true for aging well. Wellesley Neighbors offers a caring network that helps members remain independent, connected, and supported.

Members join for many reasons, including:

  • Access to social, cultural, and educational programs

  • Participation in affinity groups and cluster gatherings

  • Health and wellness resources, from posture and balance classes to expert talks

  • Practical services like rides, tech help, home assistance, and companionship

  • Vetted service provider referrals for trusted professionals

  • The peace of mind of knowing support is available if and when it’s needed

Some join because they need help now; others join for the reassurance of knowing they have a community to rely on in the future.

What Services Are Available?

Wellesley Neighbors volunteers provide:

  • Transportation to medical appointments, errands, and social activities

  • Medical companions and scribes to accompany members to appointments and take notes

  • Technology assistance to make using computers, smartphones, and Zoom easier

  • Home support visits for small tasks around the house

  • Friendly calls and visits to stay socially connected

Services depend on volunteer availability, and requests should be made through the Wellesley Neighbors office.

Who Can Join?

Membership is open to adults age 60 and older, whether single or in a household. Currently our members range from their early 70s to their 90s and beyond. Many are active and independent, while others need more support—everyone is welcome.

Can I Give the Gift of Membership?

Yes! A Wellesley Neighbors membership makes a meaningful gift for a parent, family member, or friend. It provides not only practical support, but also the gift of connection and community.

Can I Volunteer with Wellesley Neighbors?

Absolutely! Volunteers are at the heart of what we do. Many are members themselves, while others simply want to give back. Whether it’s giving rides, offering tech support, or lending a hand with small tasks, every volunteer helps strengthen our community.

What Happens in an Emergency?

In a true medical emergency, always call 911 first. Wellesley Neighbors is not an emergency response service. However, our office can provide referrals to trusted resources such as home health agencies, caregivers, and patient advocates.

What If I Need Something Not Listed?

Just ask! With years of experience and connections to local and national partners, Wellesley Neighbors can often help find solutions or point you in the right direction. Our goal is to be a trusted resource and companion for whatever comes your way.
