This exhibit explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965), Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974), and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view. No docent will lead the group so feel free to enjoy the artwork on your own.
LUNCH (and art continued): After the exhibition, travel along Route 127 (Cape Ann coast route) to Sharksmouth, a gorgeous 40-acre woodland and oceanfront estate with five houses in Manchester-by-the-Sea that was established in 1867. Jim and Judy Barr invite you to lunch in the home of the Hopkinson family. It was built for Charles Hopkinson (1869-1962), an American portrait painter, who was called by Time Magazine “The Dean of U.S. Portraitists”. At Sharksmouth, he loved to paint sea and landscape
watercolors and his five daughters. After lunch, enjoy visiting his studio and walking the Sharksmouth Estate, which remains intact to preserve and protect the historic homes and the natural landscape that continue to inspire.
