In "A Midsummer Night's Dream," Shakespeare makes sure from scene one on we can expect that the course of true love never runs smoothly; in fact, his comedy features young lovers, a group of mischievous fairies, a troupe of amateur actors, and a Duke and Queen who meet in a forest where nothing goes according to plan. He weaves the four plots of these four sets of characters into one magical evening in the woods when their paths cross. There is never a dull moment for them or for the audience.
