"Teaching about and in Prisons"
Friday, October 18 at 5 PM
on Zoom*
Ben Frommer is a member of the faculty advisory council of the Northwestern University Prison Education (NPEP), an initiative to provide a high-quality liberal arts education to incarcerated students in Illinois. For the last few years, he has been teaching an undergraduate course, "A Global History of Prisons and Camps", that examines the practice of imprisoning masses of people for extended periods of time. Although he has interacted with the prisoners in the past, next semester he will be teaching his course in the prison, with the undergraduates who choose to do so serving as tutors.
An Associate Professor in the History Department at Northwestern, Ben is an affiliate of both the German and Slavic Departments. He has written about the Holocaust and the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. He was the inaugural Director of the Holocaust Education Foundation of Northwestern University and is currently a member of the steering committee of the Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies.
